The Power Play- When Friends Will Not Leave

When four years is not enough, he wants more

We live in a world where some people like to overstay their welcome.

You know what I mean; you have a party, and there is always one, two or three friends who do not want to leave! They end up sleeping on the couch as they are just too pissed to get home!

Well, in politics and football, we have the same type of people.

Some do not want to leave.

Take, for example, the UEFA president, Aleksander Čeferin. He does not want to leave. He has been in the job for many years and has now decided to change the rules so he can stay for another four years.

So he will have been in ‘power’ for 15 years!

So, who is Ceferin?

Aleksander Čeferin is the president of UEFA, the governing body for football in Europe. He oversees major competitions like the UEFA Champions League and represents European football interests globally.

Overstaying your welcome also reminds me of another person in Russia…

Mr Putin! He first came to power in 2000 and served two consecutive terms.

Then he stood down to let his friend have a go but missed it so much that he told his friend to change the law so he could return. And he has been there ever since.

As the song goes, that’s what friends are for.

Anyway, back to Ceferin( the president of UEFA).

Ceferin became president of UEFA after Michel Platini had to leave because of a scandal. The scandal involved Michel Platini receiving a payment of 2 million Swiss francs from FIFA’s then-president Sepp Blatter, leading to a ban from football-related activities.

Ceferin was elected president of Uefa in 2016 and is due to step down in 2027!

He could be president for a third term if his new rule comes in. The rule changes will be discussed at a Uefa meeting in Rome next week.

HE WOULD THEN BE THERE UNTIL 2031!

Now this does not sound very democratic to me…talking about democracy …

Just imagine if Donald Trump got into power and passed a law that enabled him to stay there for the rest of his life. Well, okay, that’s something to think about!

Others are not speaking up about what Ceferin wants to do.

The president of football should not make the rules. All the members should make them.

Not many elected members are speaking out, and it could be because Ceferin has also been talking about changing the Champions League.

He wants to add more teams; for example, the UK could send four football teams — for example, Liverpool, Manchester City, Chelsea, and Arsenal. But he is saying that this can change it to five.

Just entering the Champions League gives the team £20 million.

Can you imagine if we could send more teams?

It’s all a game to get him to stay in the position longer.

Where do they get all that money from I hear you ask-

Well, from TV, sponsorship, and anyone else with deep pockets…

This would mean More money! As clubs from Spain, Germany, England, Italy, and France are the top teams, they would benefit directly.

So they are keeping quiet about him staying in the position forever, as they have been for at least eight years!

So, for example, poor Croatia, which can only get one team in the competition, as per qualifying, would lose out.

Update-

The English Football Association is expected to vote against controversial changes to Uefa rules that would allow its president, Aleksander Ceferin, to stay in post until 2031.
