The earth is full of mystery, and it holds the deepest secrets.

My paternal grandmother told us a story of a big sacred tree. It resides in the midst of the forest and houses all kinds of animals. The top of the tree is invisible; a thick fog covers it. Some of its branches are nests for birds. The tree trunk is big enough to house a man.

My grandma said that as a child, she always followed her parents to the farm. The forest was interlinked with their farm, and they always passed through it on their way. In the evening, whenever they headed back home, the atmosphere in the forest was always eerie, giving them chills. They would hurriedly leave the premise, but not without hearing the sound of a mortar and pestle, like a typical African pounding yam.

Rumor has it that entities lived in the tree. And in the daytime, in beautiful human form, they emerged to buy in the market.

One day, a hunter caused chaos in the community; he said he encountered the entity in the tree. He was unable to kill any animal and was so hungry that he decided to sit under the big tree. Two plates of food, pounded yam and Egusi (Melon soup), appeared in front of him. He was so scared and was about to run away when a voice from the tree told him not to fear; the food was given to him out of compassion.

Nobody knows if it was a made-up story or real.
