With Senator J.D. Vance now officially the Republican nominee for vice president, I look at him and presidential nominee Donald Trump, and I think it’s worth asking:

When did kowtowing to the Russians become an essential element of Republican policy?

Trump’s willingness to bend the knee to Russian President Vladimir Putin has been obvious since Trump was president, and his comments prior to the upcoming election have made clear he will continue such behavior if he’s reelected.

(As an aside — Trump has bragged that he will get Putin to release imprisoned Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich if Trump is reelected. If that’s true, why doesn’t Trump use his influence to get him released now? What’s the point in waiting? OK, it’s a rhetorical question — we know the answer.)

VP nominee Vance has already called for limiting US aid to Ukraine in fighting off the Russian invasion of 2022, and in February he refused to join other senators in meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. So, with him and Trump now leading the Republican ticket, it’s hard to argue that abandoning Ukraine isn’t part of the Republican platform for 2024. In…
