Who am I, where do I come from
Was I a flower or maybe a thorn,
Was I a warm summer rain
Or a storm on an evening’s threshold,

Of a soul that I hurt
I did not know that in secret it loved me.
Who am I, I wish to know
Which path to choose, a desolate one

So I may never be hurt again
Like a leaf beaten by the wind.
I wish to be perhaps a spring
With cold water without longing,

So its murmur may no longer weep
For so many longings in the evening on the meadow.
Who am I, maybe you can tell me
I wish to know before it’s too late.
