Discussing Copyright in Hamburg
A cartographer, a librarian and a journalist meet at a lawyers’ office in Hamburg — nope, not the first line of a joke, but a meeting organized by Mozilla to inform about the Copyright Reform currently discussed by the European Parliament.
The variety of individuals in the room is a testimony of the multitude of people who will be affected by the reform. Everyday actions — such as linking to a news story — are at risk to be restricted. Most of the guests have not yet been aware of that. Dr. Lukas Mezger sits both among them and between two chairs — as a copyright lawyer at Unverzagt von Have and as a Wikimedian. He describes the balancing act of being involved within both organisations and gives explanations and his opinion concerning the Articles 3, 11 and 13. Hamburg’s community turns out to be just as keen on discussing the proposals.
Wouldn’t Online lawyers be a conceivable alternative to Upload filters?
Isn’t the contemporary habit of wanting everything for free the deeper problem of our generation and the main reason of a Neighboring Right for Press Publishers?
Aren’t snippets comparable to newsstands where headlines of various newspapers are supposed to draw attention to themselves without any licenses being involved?
All in all, between Club Mate, brezels and lively discussions, it seems clear that nobody wants his or her internet regulations to do a step backwards.

Treffen sich ein Kartograf, eine Bibliothekarin und ein Journalist in einer Hamburger Anwaltskanzlei — nicht etwa der Beginn eines Witzes, sondern der Anstoß eines von Mozilla organisiertem Meetings zur anstehenden Urheberrechtsreform durch das EU-Parlament. Zusammen mit den weiteren Gästen ist die bunte Gruppe ein Spiegelbild der Vielfalt der User, die von der Reform betroffen sein werden. Denn betroffen sein wird im Grunde jeder, der sich regelmäßig auf Internet-Plattformen herumtreibt und etwa gelegentlich einen Link setzt.
Dr. Lukas Mezger sitzt als Experte mit in der Runde — und zwischen den Stühlen. Sowohl als Urheberrechts-Anwalt bei Unverzagt von Have, als auch als Wikimedianer, teilt er seine Erfahrungen, Einschätzungen und Ideen zu den Artikeln 3, 11 und 13.
