The mind is our greatest tool and weapon. Everything we have done since our birth has consistently programmed and conditioned it in a certain way.

Everything we think and perceive is a result of years of mental programming. In our everyday strive to become better, we might be deluded that time management is the key to improved productivity and better lives; but is it? Time management is even touted as the secret to a better life, but remember correlation is not causation. Science has consistently proved that mind management is the most critical productivity and self-improvement “hack” we can ever embrace. Not only does mind management boost our creativity and unleash potential but it also boosts our attitude and mental health.

Mental processes that cause stress, anxiety, depression or self-destructive tendencies can in a way be attributed to our mind management. To overcome these processes and take control of your mental health, you must learn to manage your mind.

What is Mind Management?

To answer this question, you must first understand the role of the mind in your life. The mind is defined as the seat of human consciousness that is responsible for thought, imagination, memory, will, desires and sensation. Every action you undertake has to be backed by the will and desire to undertake it. In as much as we might plan carefully, without the urge or desire to undertake and follow our plans, they remain useless.

“The eyes are useless when the mind is blind.” — Greek Proverb

Years of negative mind programming and conditioning have caused more damage to people than procrastination has. Most people today still say to themselves: “I’m not good enough”, “I’m not smart enough”, and “I’ll never get there”. These negative mindsets, flawed thinking processes, and bad mental attitudes have killed dreams, brought illnesses, and destroyed lives. In fact, procrastination could also be a result of negative mindsets and bad mental attitudes. As such, poor time management can be attributed to poor mind management.

Mind management is the process of creating or reinforcing goals in our minds and developing strategies that support the achievement of those goals. Therefore, to become more productive and improve your life, you must first manage your mind.

How To Manage Your Mind

You can manage your mind with these techniques:

  1. Vision and goal setting — In life, you have to know where you are going and what you want to achieve. Make sure your goals are aligned with your purpose. Otherwise, you will be like a rudderless boat without direction. Knowing where you are headed enables you to create time-specific goals. These include short-term, medium-term, and long-term goals.
  2. Stock Taking — While goal setting is vital, it is not sufficient on its own. You need to constantly evaluate where you are, any achievements you have made, and any challenges you have faced. This technique also helps you identify and eliminate limiting beliefs. Ensure that you write any limiting beliefs.
  3. Releasing limiting beliefs — Once you have identified limiting beliefs, they must be expunged. A good way is to take the note containing the limiting beliefs and tear or burn it.
  4. Empowering affirmations — Replace limiting beliefs with self-reassuring and positive affirmations. The best way to undertake affirmations is out loud and over a period of time. Repetition is key to belief.
  5. Visualization — This is imagining your desired outcome over and over again. It is like a mental rehearsal that helps keep your mind fixated on the prize.

You can also adopt mindfulness practices such as meditation and journalling to complement your mind management efforts. Once you have learned mind management techniques, your mind is finally in the right place to allow change to occur. You will now unlock more productivity and growth in your life. In addition, mind management directly affects the way you think and act (the mental attitude) and the way you feel (the mental state). Once you have embraced these techniques, you will begin to create positive results in your life!
