Crackers have been a pantry staple for centuries, evolving from basic flatbreads to the vast array of options we see on shelves today. From wheat thins to an array of Ritz, there are endless options! But have you ever wondered what makes crackers so unique? Let’s find out.

There is Supposed to be a Hole There

Notice those tiny holes punctured in crackers? They’re not just for show. These perforations prevent air bubbles from ruining the perfect flatness and crispiness of your snack. During baking, steam tries to escape. Without these holes, your crackers would look more like pillows! So if you have ever tried making these at home, and thought “Oh I can skip that step!”, think again!

A Cracker for Everyone

Crackers come in an astonishing variety, catering to all tastes and dietary preferences. Here’s a quick list of some popular types:

  • Saltines: The classic, light, and airy with a sprinkle of salt. Perfect for upset bellies and soups.
  • Graham: Slightly sweet, made with graham flour, perfect for s’mores.
  • Water: Simple and classy, made with flour and water; a charcuterie board staple.
  • Whole Wheat: Packed with fiber and full of flavor. Most people love these with hummus dip.
  • Cheese Crackers: For those who can’t resist the cheese pull.

What Health Benefits?

While crackers are often seen as just a vehicle for cheeses and dips, choosing the right crackers can also offer nutritional benefits. Whole grain varieties, for example, provide dietary fiber, which aids in digestion and can help you feel fuller longer. Pairing them with healthy dips like hummus or nut butter can also boost your snack’s protein content.

Homemade Crackers

Why buy when you can DIY them? Making crackers at home is easier than you think, and it allows you to control the ingredients, ensuring you’re snacking healthy. Here are two simple recipes to get you started:

Classic Homemade Whole Wheat Crackers

Ingredients:
- 2 cups whole wheat flour
- 1 tsp sugar
- 1 tsp salt
- 4 tbsp unsalted butter, cold and cubed
- 1/2 cup water
- 2 tbsp olive oil
- Optional: Sea salt, sesame seeds, or poppy seeds for topping

Instructions:
1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
2. In a large bowl, combine flour, sugar, and salt. Add the butter and use your fingers to work it into the flour until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
3. Stir in water and olive oil until a dough forms.
4. Roll out the dough on a floured surface until thin. Cut into desired shapes and place on a baking sheet.
5. Prick each cracker with a fork to prevent puffing and sprinkle with your chosen toppings.
6. Bake for 10–15 minutes, or until crispy and golden. Let cool before serving.

Rosemary and Sea Salt Crackers

Ingredients:
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 tbsp fresh rosemary, finely chopped
- 1 tsp sugar
- 1 tsp sea salt, plus more for sprinkling
- 6 tbsp olive oil
- 1/2 cup water

Instructions:
1. Follow the same method as the whole wheat crackers, adding the rosemary to the flour mixture.
2. After rolling out the dough, sprinkle with additional sea salt before cutting into shapes.
3. Bake and cool as per the instructions above.

Crackers, with their humble existence and simple ingredients, have become a beloved snack in everyone’s home. Whether you’re reaching for a box off the shelf or making your own at home, crackers offer endless possibilities for the best snack time!
