Children’s poetry for a long time, has been given importance as a means to enable children grasp new vocabulary more easily, develop language skills and learn concepts better, especially at the kindergarten stage. Written by Mrs.Poonam Sethi, a kindergarten teacher with 38 years of experience in the field, “Fun with Poems” does all that and much more. It brings into the ambit of learning, ordinary, yet important concepts such as posting a letter and it’s journey afterward, the fact that the police exists to protect us but must be contacted only during emergency and so on.

Mrs.Poonam Sethi, strongly believes in the power of poems while teaching her students. Many a time, when she cannot find apt poems for her lessons, she simply writes her own poems to teach any important concept, in an engaging manner. Fun with Poems is a compilation of all those poems, which she says are simply stories written with rhythm and many rhyming words.

How do poems facilitate learning?

Most children in India, says Mrs.Poonam Sethi, are exposed to mainly their mother tongue at home during their pre-school years. Switching over to English and grasping the new language in school takes time. Poetry facilitates this process, as it uses rhythm and the jingle in poems help children remember words easily, thus enhancing their vocabulary as well as their memory.

In a typical day in the classroom, the children recite the poems with her together. This exercise she observes has encouraged even quiet children to come out of their shells and participate. Every poetry session is combined with discussions with the children about the concept planned for the day. They are encouraged to contribute what they know and have seen. Playful activities that involve a lot of role play are also organised. Role play makes children feel important and they tend to forget all their inhibitions, says Mrs.Poonam Sethi. In the process, comprehensive learning and revision of new concepts get done smoothly. Over time, she has observed that this format has boosted the confidence of her students and they are able to express themselves better in English.
