Using the Headwrap App

I had no idea that I would start using a book summary app. I had no idea I would discover I enjoy it and find advantages for using it. Going off my streak, I’ve been using the Headway app for 41 days. I’m a little surprised at how useful I find it, even after just over a month!

What is a book summary app? Well, that seems pretty self-explanatory. Book summaries take many forms — like the Cliff Notes we remember from high school — but as an app, the idea is that the summaries are around a certain length (maybe a 15-minute listen), and you expose yourself to a range of ideas without having to read the whole book. I’d read articles and seen some YouTube videos of people who found these apps helpful, so I decided to try some out.

Why I was resistant

I’m a public librarian, and I am VERY much in favor of people reading books. (And listening to an audiobook counts!) So for a long time I didn’t think much of book summaries in their various forms. I’m okay with a synopsis, but an in-depth summary was a reason for me to look at it cock-eyed and wonder why not read the actual book? The hoopla app my public library subscribes to is infamous for having a lot of book summaries of popular books instead of the books themselves, which usually ends up confusing or disappointing our patrons.
