Lentil spicy soup/ Bele saaru / Dal rasam recipe

Pretty easy and all time favorite Karnataka Saaru or Rasam prepared with tamarind juice with added spices and garnish.

Servings: Serves 2

Ingredients:

1 cup toor dal (pigeon pea lentil), cooked & mashed

¼ cup tamarind extract

1 tablespoon jaggery (1 small piece)

½ teaspoon turmeric powder

1 green chillies (optional)

2 tablespoon rasam powder

1 cup water

Salt to taste

For tempering:

2 teaspoon coconut oil

1 teaspoon mustard seeds

1 dry red chilli

A pinch asafoetida

Few curry leaves

For garnish:

2 tablespoon coriander leaves, chopped

Method:

  1. In a pot, add tamarind extract, jaggery, turmeric powder, green chilli, salt and ¾ cup of water. Let it boil.
  2. When it starts boiling, add cooked toor dal & remaining water and simmer it for 5–6 minutes.
  3. Add rasam powder, stir well and continue to simmer for another 10 minutes. (Adjust the taste in this step)
  4. Temper the rasam with oil, mustard seeds, asafoetida, red chilli and curry leaves.
  5. Turn off the heat and garnish with coriander leaves.
  6. Bele saaru is ready to taste with steamed rice and ghee.

Note:

  • You can add chopped tomatoes in this saaru. But adjust the tamarind extract, if you are adding the tomatoes.
  • Serve the Bele saaru with your favorite vegetable palya( mixed vegetable fry) and papad.
