And why educators must bring the conversation to their classrooms

By: Rooz Aliabadi (+GPT)

Last week was really exciting in the world of Artificial intelligence (AI) and Large Language Models (LLMs)! Some big players like Google and Anthropic released new AI products, but I think the most impressive announcement was from OpenAI. They made a new language model called GPT-4 that can do many things simultaneously, not just talk like its previous model ChatGPT-3.

Only developers can now use GPT-4, but people are already trying it out and having fun with it. Even though it’s still new, we can expect to see it in many new products and services. Here are some cool things people are doing with GPT-4 right now (and it’s only been one week since its release)!

Let me start with the craziest one I have seen in the news this week:

Starting a business and making $$$:

A guy named Jackson Greathouse Fall asked GPT-4, a fancy computer program, to help him make as much money as possible with only $100. GPT-4 suggested he make a website promoting eco-friendly products to earn money through affiliate marketing. Then, he asked GPT-4 to create a logo and generate social media advertising content.

The cool thing is, it actually worked! People on social media were so impressed that they wanted to invest in Jackson’s new marketing business inspired by GPT-4. He ended up making $1,378.84! Even though it was just a publicity stunt, it shows how AI can help people develop creative ideas.

Making Your Next PowerPoint:

Getting work done quicker and better is essential for businesses, and AI can help. Big tech players like Microsoft and Alphabet want us to use AI in our work. Microsoft’s Office suite will have GPT-4 to help us summarize documents and create presentations (I have used Chat GPT to make bullet points for several PowerPoint Presentations). Alphabet is also adding AI tech to its office products like Google Docs and Gmail to help with drafting emails, proofreading texts, and making images for presentations.

Helping Doctors:

Let’s look at how these LLMs are used in the healthcare sector today. OpenAI gave Ambience Health seed capital. The company uses GPT-4 to write down information about what patients and doctors talk about during medical visits. It will help doctors save time and not have to do tedious work like typing. The founder of Ambience Health thinks GPT-4 is better at following directions than older AI models. But it is still too early to know how well it will do in the medical field, where it’s essential to be accurate. OpenAI improved the model, but it sometimes makes mistakes and can be biased. That’s why it’s important to have humans check and correct their work.

Writing Codes:

Arvind Narayanan, a computer science professor at Princeton University, got GPT-4 to create code that converts URLs to citations in less than 10 minutes. He thinks generating code is the most useful application of GPT-4, as it can save time and be psychologically helpful. In a demonstration, Greg Brockman, a cofounder of OpenAI, used GPT-4 to create a website based on a simple image of a design he drew on a napkin. The power of these AI systems lies in their ability to automate low-stakes and time-consuming tasks.

Writing Books:

Reid Hoffman, the co-founder and executive chairman of LinkedIn and an early investor in OpenAI, recently revealed that he utilized GPT-4 in co-authoring his new book, Impromptu: Amplifying Our Humanity through AI. While its predecessor ChatGPT has been used in creating multiple books, Hoffman believes that Impromptu is the first book co-written by GPT-4. Hoffman gained access to the system last summer and has been sharing his insights on how the AI model could be leveraged in various fields such as education, journalism, the arts, and the justice system. In the book, which contains excerpts from his conversations with the system, he presents his perspective on the future of AI. He utilizes GPT-4 as a writing assistant to generate fresh ideas while evaluating its responses.

GPT-4 and other LLMs entering the market are the latest and most remarkable tools in the AI community today. It’s a remarkable technology that can assist with generating ideas, summarizing text, explaining concepts, and automating tedious tasks, which is particularly useful for white-collar professionals.

However, it’s crucial to note that OpenAI and other players caution against its use and emphasize that it poses safety risks such as privacy infringement, deceiving people into believing it’s human, and producing harmful content. It can also be utilized for risky behaviors we haven’t yet encountered. Therefore, while it’s thrilling to explore its possibilities, we mustn’t become blinded by the hype. Nothing prevents individuals from using these powerful models to cause harm, and there are no systems in place to hold them accountable if they do.

At ReadyAI, we believe the first step to genuinely exploring the strengths, weaknesses, and ethics of Chat GPT should be taken in classrooms.

I believe AI has the potential to improve lives globally. Still, we must also establish approaches to guarantee that any potential downsides are outweighed by the benefits and that everyone can access those benefits, regardless of location or socioeconomic status. The Age of AI is filled with possibilities and responsibilities. We should start the conversation in the classroom.
