PITTSBURGH, PA — (August 14, 2019) — The City Council of Pittsburgh proclaimed July 27th, 2019, the day of World Artificial Intelligence Competition for Youth (WAICY) as “AI Learning Day for Kids” in the city of Pittsburgh, where the event took place.

WAICY is an annual global competition that challenges students to solve real problems using AI technology. Local students participated in ReadyAI’s 4-day summer camp leading up to WAICY, where they learned the most relevant AI concepts and designed demos to illustrate how AI can positively benefit society. Local students are joined at WAICY by students from several countries such as China, Spain, and Germany who came to the US to showcase their projects.

The competition is a remarkable opportunity to spark students’ interest in AI and computer science at a young age, prepare them for the workforce of the future, and encourage discussions on the impact of technology and our collective humanity.

To commemorate the event, the City Council declared the day of WAICY to be “AI Learning Day for Kids,” acknowledging the significance of AI education, especially in Pittsburgh. “WAICY is a testament of Pittsburgh’s commitment to innovation and fostering this city as the right place to lead the AI charge in the 21st century for the next generation, students and educators alike. WAICY aims to bring AI to students all around the world and spark creative, innovative, and artistic demonstrations of the technology that can make a change for a better future,” declared Councilwoman Darlene Harris.

WAICY Organizing Committee President Andrew Chen and Carnegie Mellon University Professor David Touretzky spoke at the city council meeting, both emphasizing the importance of WAICY and AI education. The proclamation was passed in the council unanimously. This recognition from the city is an incredible honor and encouragement for everyone involved in WAICY. The WAICY team aims to continue the success of WAICY 2019 in the coming year and bring AI education to even more students around the globe.
