5 Fundamental Features Real Estate Shoppers Should Check at an Open House

Don’t be Distracted at a Real Estate Open House. Check the Following Five Features Before You Make an Offer

Before you attend an open house to find your new dream home it is crucial you know what to look for. While hardwood flooring and elaborate light fixtures are enticing, they aren’t the factors that will matter to your family once you have settled into your new real estate purchase. Pay attention to the following five factors to make sure your dream home doesn’t turn out to be a nightmare.

1] Review the kitchen layout. Are the refrigerator, stove, and dishwasher conveniently located? Is there ample cupboard space and counter-top room for food preparation? Don’t be distracted by fancy fixtures and sumptuous surfaces; make sure the basic layout will work for you and your family.

2] Pay attention to the amount of natural light in a home. You want the rooms to be filled with natural light from premium grade windows.

3] Room size is a critical factor for most families. Will your furniture fit with plenty of room to spare? A small room is fine for a home office, but you don’t want any family members to feel like they are being relegated to a dungeon instead of a bedroom.

4] How much parking space is available? Pay attention to the garage size as well as the usable driveway space.

5] Check the electrical panel when visiting an open house. Is there room to add any circuits or is the panel at maximum capacity? If you are viewing an older home, is there any sign of knob and tube wiring?

It is easy to get sidetracked by decorative options like granite counter-tops and fancy appliances when attending open houses, but those aren’t the things that will truly matter once you have moved into a new home. How many of the above-listed items will you check at the next real estate open house you visit?
