On a creative process

While it’s iterative and a lot of these parts of the process overlap, there is a flow to it.

You start off in this wonderful blank space, an open universe of possibilities and within that you start to see these ideas bubbling up. As you take ideas you see them develop and take shape as you turn them over in your hands. You transition from sculpting smoke to sculpting wet clay and shape them with more and more definition. As you do this, exploring an opportunity by pursuing it down a particular alley or corridor, you realise that the more shape and definition you give it by following it along, the more you run past closed doors without opening them. Giving one idea definition rules out the millions of possible alternate versions of it.

This is drafting.

Only later comes the edit, and that’s a different beast altogether.
