I currently live in the mostly sunny state of Florida, known for its mild winters and bulging flights of seasonal visitors. Except for the occasional tropical storm or hurricane, most of the year, the weather is great.

But there are always inevitable trade-offs …

Fourteen years ago, my husband and I migrated east from Arizona.

Living most of my adult life in two southern states meant the holidays were a balmy, blue-skied, T-shirt time of year, where Christmas made its presence known by the appearance of glittery decorations and tinsel garland haphazardly strung around palm tree trunks and screened-in patios. Under a blazing blue sky, their sparkling testament to the season reflected in the sun with enough brilliance to require darkly tinted sunglasses.

Of course, no matter where you live, the holiday season wouldn’t be complete without the requisite overly stressed drivers making mad-dash shopping trips to the nearest mall to grab armfuls of sale items and Black Friday specials.

Except if you live closer to the equator, the weather for such gift-hunting…
