When: Summer

Glavotok campsite on the beautiful Croatian island Krk is my recommendation for new and experienced campers who enjoy staying plein air without a lot of gadgets. The campgrounds are well equipped with clean, easy access facilities.

We enjoyed staying in the free camping area where you can choose your parking spot and your tent residence under some majestic, old oak trees without big camping vans blocking your view. What surprised us was the great respect between people there, the nights were mostly quiet after ten o’clock so kids and parents can get enough sleep.

Be aware of the friendly goat. It sometimes gets out of the mini-zoo above the campgrounds and will check for goodies in your trash bag! For my first campsite experience overall, it was a really comfortable experience (the free zone, not the trash hunting goat).

Clear water as far as you can swim.

Close to the entrance where restaurants and little shops are located, you have direct access to some beautiful rocky beaches. If you make the effort to pass by the center of activity right along the campsite and restaurant, you will find quiet coves where relaxed, like minded people stay away from the crowd and the music. Continue along the shore to find a family agreeable cliff diving area.

Make sure to bring your rubber shoes or buy some before your first trip to the beach. Close to the shore some hefty little sea urchins hold on to their rocky residences, but you can easily find a path around them to swim in the crystal clear turquoise waters. The water temperature is delightful in August.

Fresh produce is available at a little market stall next to the bakery, so we happily cooked simple yet original food on our little camping stove; all you need to enjoy a few days of simple, nomadic, summer life.

Our persian carpets and field futon were the envy of our neighbours. How many campers use professional filmmaking cases for a coffee table?
