Oliver decided to open up an ice cream shop in our garden and so began the race for suitable ingredients.

“Need mud for chocolate. What use for banana flavour?” A moment’s frantic search and he ran to me with a triumphant handful of yellowy dried grass.

“Need green now!” He paused in thought, then exclaimed, “Oh, grass!” And darted to the lawn to fetch some, giggling at his obtuseness.

Suddenly he stopped. “Really need blue. Where find blue? Oh,in with clouds!” He stretched up to the summer sky. “Can’t reach. Maybe get chair.”

That didn’t work. “Really want daddy reach sky and get blue. Daaaadddyyyyyy!” he shouted, running into the house. He careened into David’s legs and looked up with bright eyes. “Really want daddy get blue!”
