An Accidental Fashion Writer
I approached the topic reluctantly but came to love the beat
Fashion may be glamorous. Writing about it rarely was.
I sold my first fashion story in 1979. I sold my last in 2015. I never wanted to write another fashion story ever again. Period! I was ready to lounge around devouring delicious novels while wearing thoroughly unstylish sweats.
For a while I pretty much did that.
I wrote fiction and personal essays that were published in several literary journals and anthologies. A big five publisher acquired my first kids’ picture book, and in 2021 it earned an ALA Booklist starred review, Amazon editors’ pick, and a Bank Street best books 2022 selection.
To make sure I got out of my word-filled head to occasionally interact with the real world, I also volunteered at the Public Radio station, a non-profit film company, and reading program for underserved school children.
Life was fulfilling.
But I found my fingers on the keyboard absolutely itching to write something based in real life when fashion called like a Siren.
I decided I wouldn't write about fashion but would write about writing about fashion.
