When I launched Real a couple of months ago, I did not expect that it’d take off as quickly as it did. Within the first two months, we got an influx of over 300 writers. Today, there are over 600 writers — and counting!

For everyone that’s shown interest in Real, including and especially writers that have been sending in their works, I say thank you.

We’re grateful to have you with us.

Now, to the gist of this piece, many writers that have commented and expressed their interest to write for us are wondering if they’ve been added.

Simple answer: YES! You’ve been added.

Due to the high number of requests, it was impossible for me to write to every single one of you to inform you that you’ve been added.

So the one tactic I employed was to clap for each request that I added as a writer.

That is to say: if at any point you received a clap notification from me, it means you’ve been added.

There are some, however, that, based on the unique comment they left, I had to take the time to respond and say, “You’ve been added.” I’m sure those have no problem.

Editors Needed

We’re in need of editors. If you have writing and editing experience and would like to volunteer, in order to harness your editing skill, contact me via email at georgebluekelly@gmail.com.

Editors will be picked based on the following:

  • How long you’ve been on Medium
This is important because we need someone who understands how Medium articles are properly formatted.
They also have a good idea of navigating both the medium website and mobile application.
  • How consistent they are
We need editors so we can cater to the number of drafts and submissions we receive. To enable us to respond to writers quickly and reduce the time it takes to publish articles.
  • The quality of their articles
We need people who have an eye for quality, to help us in promoting quality pieces. A good way to judge this is by taking a look at your own writing to see if it possesses quality itself.

What’s expected of an editor?

As editors, first, we scan a piece to see if it’s fit for Real. This is where all editors are expected to get themselves acquainted with our guidelines and what we’re looking for. Any article that doesn’t tell a story, or narrates an event or an experience, editors are expected to reject.

If an article fits these criteria, we then proceed to check its formatting. Articles must contain a title, subtitle, and an image whose source is cited in the text box just underneath.

Editors will also check to see if there are grammatical errors to fix them. We also can rewrite ambiguous sentences. Or simply to make a sentence read better.

Huge blocks of text must be broken into paragraphs with a maximum of six lines, for better readability.

Even though an article fits our publication, if it has too many errors like improper formatting, editors have the right to either ask the writer to make the necessary changes and proper formatting or reject the piece entirely. Depending on how badly written the article is.

And finally, editors are in charge of adding writers who’ve left a comment showing their interest in writing with us. Again, this is why a good understanding of how Medium works is crucial.

Editors will not publish an article if:

  • There is no title
  • Has no featured image just beneath the title and subtitle
  • Contains too many grammatical errors
  • The image source isn’t cited
  • It’s not a fit for our publication

In this case, depending on the gravity of the errors or what’s lacking, the editor may ask the writer to make the changes or simply choose to reject the piece entirely.

If this interests you, and you wish to volunteer, again, email me at georgebluekelly@gmail.com

Thank you for reading and God bless you. Happy writing!
