It was a spectacle — a day to be remembered. Beyond any doubt.
As the beat of Michael Jackson’s ‘Billie Jean,’ hit hundreds of students, parents, and guests, the entire Oba Akenzua Cultural Centre was burst up in a frenzy.
Sparkling lights exploded into the air, revealing my uncle — moving in perfect sync with the beat as if he were Michael Jackson himself. He struck Jackson’s iconic pose, hand on his crotch, then slid smoothly into the next move, completely in tune with the music.
A swift swirl, a kick of the leg, and landing on both toes, gave way to a splendid moonwalk that made the crowd go gaga.
That day, friends of mine, dressed in black and white, all following my uncle’s lead, gave a performance that's forever etched in my memory — whilst I stood in the crowd with mixed feelings of excitement and regret.
It could have been me too up on stage.
But I was shy and afraid. So I hid and gave excuses upon excuses to my uncle through the entire month of practice. I remember peeping through the back window, watching my friends learn and practice how to breakdance.
