Which chords are preferred in advertisements’ songs?

Advertisements prefer simple and happy chord progressions. The goal is to set a positive mood and not distract from the message.

Typical examples are:

  • Just one major chord (e.g. C)
  • Alternating between a chord and its relative minor (e.g. C Am)
  • Using very familiar chord progressions like I V vi IV (e.g. C G Am F)

The chords are usually kept as simple triads with no extensions or options — although you can throw in a 7 or 9 occasionally for effect.
