At some point in our journeys as prospective graduates, we’ll start seeking out our first opportunities to gain industry work experience and begin navigating our career roadmaps. Many graduates find this to be the most challenging part of University, probably more so than any exam or project you’ve worked on!

Contrary to popular belief, there’s actually an abundance of opportunity available to us — with a thriving landscape of organizations and ambitious start-ups seeking young talent, there’s bound to be a role out there which aligns with your skillsets and desired career path. But why exactly is this such a challenge for so many students and does it need to be this way?

A Faulty Foundation

Before you even click on the job application, the odds may already seem against you. Trying to stand-out in front of thousands of other applicants in itself is a challenge. However, standing-out can be simplified to your ability to communicate your unique set of experiences, skills and passions to the recruiter. This is why it’s so critical that you’ve established a well-rounded portfolio of community and curricular engagements, of which makes-up the foundation of your resume, and more importantly — gives the recruiter a semblance of your personal character during interviews.

Things such as your personal brand, motivations, values and passion are things that you develop before even typing a single sentence into your application. Understanding what motivates you and building your community network does not happen overnight! It’s important to note that this takes TIME. Do yourself a favour; start early to give yourself the best chances possible! The earlier the better, don’t wait until it’s too late!

Embrace the Tedium

It’s well known that the recruitment process can be quite tedious. Often you’ll need to persevere through many touch-points with an organization, including — resumes, cover letters, psychometric testing, video interviews, phone interviews, assessment centers, case study interviews and face-to-face interviews. You may be thinking, this is ridiculous, why do organisations have to make things so complicated? Well, they are right to do so.

Recruiters look for many things in their search for new talent and have meticulously crafted their recruitment models to ensure that they’ve gained a fair and holistic assessment of you. They want to know whether you’ll be able to thrive and grow within the organizational culture. These touchpoints in the recruitment process are also great opportunities for you to discover whether the organization is an appropriate fit to your own values and how they can support you to achieve your career aspirations.

While the process may be lengthy, it’s best to practice a mindset of patience because at the end of the day, it’s really is to the mutual benefit to both yourself and the recruiter. The last thing you want is to start your career in the wrong organization!
