How it all started?
The year 2016 has been a pretty rough time for me. In fact, it was probably the hardest phase of my entire life. I’ve been through something which almost capsized my career and wrecked my life. However, it made me realize my strength and my tolerance for emotional pain — It tested me to the core of my being. Adversity became the fire that purged and forged me. Fortunately, I’ve emerged out of that phase sane and sound.
I’ve also realized that there are millions of people silently struggling in life just like me. I wanted to help them overcome their depression and negativity by simply reminding them to see and appreciate the good things in life which are usually taken for granted.
Count your blessings
The practice of The Attitude of Gratitude started as a result of the struggle in dealing with the anguish. I’ve started to desperately find ways to cope with it. I don’t mean drugs and alcohol, though. The way I’ve felt a lot better was to slowly make a habit of finding reasons to be grateful (however insignificant they might seem to be) .
I’ve started to acknowledge and document all the things in my life that I’ve felt are worthy of appreciation and gratitude.
When I’ve compared myself to millions of people dying for lack of food and basic health, I’ve realized how ungrateful I really am. I’ve realized how worse my life could have been yet wasn’t and that I ought to be grateful for it.
There’s always something or the other lacking in everyone’s lives; even the richest and most powerful people can’t have it all.
Finally, it all comes down to a matter of choice, we can either choose to look at the things we lack OR feel grateful for the things we do.
It’s definitely not easy
I started counting my blessings and tried as much as possible to not focus on the things that I lack.
Sure, it wasn’t easy but I’ve practiced making a conscious effort to notice and be mindful of the under-rated blessings in my life.
Often times I’ve had to consciously remind myself to relax and not be carried away by depression and negative thoughts. Furthermore, when I’ve compared myself to the hundreds of millions of people around the world dying for lack of basic healthcare, and many others kidnapped, raped, tortured and murdered, I’d realized how ungrateful I am being. It’s a practice of perspective.
We might never know how many people in this world wish to switch places with us.
Therefore, since then I’ve started to make a list of the things, significant or insignificant, small or great, that I genuinely appreciated the presence or absence in my life. The things which make life more livable and awesome. The ones that I truly and deeply felt thankful for.
Hence the name- Reasons to be grateful.
If we only would look more carefully, we can almost always find gratitude in every situation of our life.
No matter how hard your life may seem at the present moment, just remember that if you have food to eat, and a comfortable place to sleep; you’re more fortunate than the millions of people who don’t.
Practicing an Attitude of Gratitude:
Once I’ve become aware of all the good things happening around me, my life has become so much better. Most of the time, the things I’m most grateful for aren’t the things money can buy. Things like a beautiful sunset, a nice cool breeze, my dog’s excited greeting, these can be noticed and appreciated by almost anyone.
There’s a certain level of threshold to the level of happiness money can buy, it may buy you comfort but not heartfelt happiness.
I hope to inspire as many as possible to practice this attitude of gratitude and to be grateful for the seemingly little yet beautiful things in life and hack their way out of the difficult times.
