According to Investopedia the Small Business Association (SBA) found that 50% of businesses fail during their first five years of operation. As we moved into our 6th year of “official” business in October 2018 we wanted to make sure we ended this year as our best one yet and move past that stark statistic.

It was a whirlwind of a year that we detailed in our latest Q1-Q3 report. A year that was steeped with wins and losses, hard lessons and a 300% revenue growth from the past year. The reason: we realigned focus and made a promise to not lay trap to statistics.

See below for a quick Q4 report and a Year In Review. We look forward to working with you in 2019!

So What Did We Do in Q4?

We made a promise to keep you updated with monthly newsletters and quarterly reports. Expanded our Talent division with the singer and songwriter Ari Chi, actor Shannon Wallace and our Apparel & Accessories division with luxury accessories line SSY Designs. Secured over 10 press placements including Broadly and Elle Magazine. Proclaimed “Wakanda Forever” with some 6th graders from PS 181. Encouraged an industry to move into the digital era. Took over our first Broadway red carpet. And, got a social shout out from Soledad O’Brien.

Top Three Lessons We Learned in 2018

Enjoy the Wins
Sometimes when work is the focus, we find ourselves bulldozing past the wins and not taking the time to celebrate those moments. Personally, I decided to take more time to relish these moments and in terms of business we started to release monthly newsletters with highlights. These newsletters aren’t only great for new business but they allow us to look back on what we got right this year! Read our October Newsletter, November Newsletter and December Newsletter to celebrate those wins with us.

It’s Time to Grow
We worked with some consultants at the top of the year and realized that it was time to expand the team officially. We worked hard this year to ensure that we would open up hiring in 2019.

Do The Work
I made a decision early in 2018 to take my business seriously and if I didn’t stand by the promise to myself I would go back to the corporate life. Scary, I know. Unlike past years I dived fully into the work with clients, contractors and more. I wasn’t perfect but the effort paid off. Now more than ever I am dedicated to doing the work, the type of work that exceeds 100%.

Our Top Moments of 2018

CultureCon
This past October 2018 The Creative Collective produced their second annual CultureCon featuring John Legend, Nick Cannon, Deray Mckesson, Tyler Mitchell and more. We were tasked with handling Talent Escort & Management.

Marija Abney in THAT look
Marija stunned us and everyone on the red carpet at the opening party for Broadway’s The Cher Show. We were happy to secure a stylist for this look and help Marija achieve her goal of the evening — all eyes on her.

Ask Auntie Reviewing Glossier Products
Having Ask Auntie try on and review Glossier produced the funniest video we did all year. They truly had “no filter” and learned a few makeup tricks.

Yoga with Jaimee Hip-Hop Yoga Spotify Playlists with Tracy G and Lauren Ash
When we worked with Jaimee Ratliff on her Hip Hop Yoga tour she wanted to market the event in a unique way. We came up with these regional playlists for Spotify co-created with wellness influencers. They were a way for attendees to get excited about the event in their city and use for their own personal yoga sessions.

Buzzfeed “More Than Grunt Work” Event
One of my favorite moments from the year was co-hosting our first “More Than Grunt Work” event with Buzzfeed. We have a passion for supporting and guiding talent of color in communications and this first successful event have us excited about what is to come in 2019.

Bonus: Marija Abney “The Movement” video
This was one of my favorite press placements from this year because of the amount of time and effort it took to confirm. Not to mention it turned out amazing and was a great profile for Marija’s brand.

So What’s Next?

We have another startling number. The SBA also found that 66% of businesses fail within the first ten years. We are rolling into the second half of our first decade with this percentage as a number but not a reality. Make sure to follow along on social at Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter as we roll out new client campaigns and learn more about business this year.
