All Xboxes have this really awesome feature built in where it saves the last 30 seconds of gameplay by pressing a series of buttons. They brought this feature into Windows 10 but made it a little of hidden feature. At the end of this guide, you will have “background recording” setup and have recorded your first clip!

Prerequisites

Unfortunately, this feature does only work in full-screen games and requires that you have a graphics card that supports it. Windows also states that you may experience a performance hit when activating this feature even though I haven’t seen it myself.

I’ve also seen that the “Game bar” will bind itself more reliabily if you open the game in a windowed or windowed borderless mode (especially in Overwatch).

Turning it on

  • Open the Xbox app from your Start Menu
  • Navigate to the settings of the app
  • Turn on “background recording” and leave all other options default

Making a recording

Making a recording is now really easy. While you’re in a game, you can use “Win + Alt + G” to save the last 30 seconds of what was on your screen. It will then appear in the Xbox app for you.
