Tunisian “Bambalouni” recipe

Very much like Asian donuts. you will find Bambalounis anywhere, mostly near the sea in Tunis. Especially in Sidi Bousaid (it’s the Santorini of Tunisia), don’t miss the chance to get one..
But if you can’t go to Sidi Bousaid, well, we’ll bring Sidi Bousaid to you!

Ingredients:

250g Flour
1 cup hot water
1Tsp dried yeast
1Tsp salt
Oil (to deep fry with)
Sugar (to sprinkle on top)

Simple and quick:

  • Mix hot water with yeast.
  • Add to flour.
  • Keep mixing until you get a slimy creamy substance, add a bit of water if necessary.
  • Let rest anytime from 2 hours to overnight.
  • Heat your oil, and try to form circles with your dough in the frying pan, you will get there eventually.
  • Once bronzed, get your Bambalounis out and sprinkle some sugar on top, and there you go! done!

Bambalounis are usually part of breakfast or end of the day snack, best served with coffee with milk.
