When I spoke out and told family and friends that I got married I got asked these questions.

  • What is your new name?
  • How does your ring look like?
  • Did you wear a white dress?
  • When is the wedding celebration?

First of all, I did not change my name. My ring did cost less than 5 Dollars and I bought my yellow “wedding” dress from a street vendor in Thailand. And there won’t be any celebration.

Is my marriage now worth less?

In what world are we living in where we need to prove ourselves and the society with expensive material things the worth of our relationship? Why do people judge as soon as you break the “tradition”?

I’ve never been part of that part of the society. I found designer bags ugly and couldn’t cope with make-up on my face. I couldn’t care less about what society thinks about me and what I am supposed to do.

The last seven years of my life do prove this. On so many levels I broke unspoken rules and did things I wasn’t supposed to do. I traveled the African continent on my own and decided to not return to the first…
