Echoes of Discrimination

I have many friends who went overseas for their studies and some also went there to start their work-life.

For a long time, I had an idealised picture of countries that were described as highly developed, believing that their progress extended to all aspects of society, including social harmony and inclusiveness. I thought these countries were shining examples of modernity, where people of various origins could live free of the preconceptions and biases that so often plague regions that are less developed.

Recently, I was talking on video call to one of my friend who is working in Canada. However, after listening to my friend’s experience I felt a bit disappointed.

One evening after a long day at work, he went to Walmart to pick up some groceries. As he approached the store, a homeless person outside began shouting some ill words. This homeless man suddenly started abusing my friend because of his skin color and being an Indian. This incident made him really uncomfortable and hurt.

I can see how much he was hurt. I feel very sad to know that some people judge others based on their native place and skin color. I know that not everyone is like this, but when you have such experiences in a foreign place, it makes you feel even more homesick.

The incident that happened with my friend has caused me a lot of sadness. He also mentioned that this isn’t the first time he’s had to face such an incident, and it has happened to him on the metro several times as well.

People sometimes stare at him, whisper behind his back, or even make loud, offensive comments. These experiences showed him that racism is still a problem, even in countries we think are very advanced.

His story made me realize that even in developed countries, there can be serious social issues like racism. It made me rethink my assumptions and understand that we still have a long way to go to achieve true equality and acceptance everywhere.

I just wish to create a safe world where we can live together with equality and justice. Let’s create such a world where we are all safe for each other.

John Whye shared a thoughtful post about indifference makes a difference.

I also want to mention Giulietta Passarelli shared a beautiful poetry.
