The Joy of Audiobooks
Reading with the ears
I have a confession to make: I am an audiobook addict. There is nothing quite like the pleasure of being transported to another world, or having a great story read to me by a talented narrator.
For me, the joy of audiobooks lies in their ability to be enjoyed anytime, anywhere. Whether I’m driving to work, going for a run, or simply relaxing at home, I can lose myself in a good book simply by popping in my headphones and pressing play.
But it’s not just the convenience of audiobooks that I love. It’s also the way they can bring a book to life in a way that simply reading it on the page can’t. A skilled narrator can bring characters to life with their voice acting, and can add depth and emotion to the story that you might miss if you were simply reading it yourself.
Audiobooks and driving
There is nothing quite like setting off on a long journey, settling into the driver’s seat, and pressing play on a captivating audiobook.
For me, there is something truly magical about the way an audiobook can transform a mundane car journey into a thrilling adventure. Whether I’m driving through the countryside or stuck in traffic on the motorway, I can escape into a world of imagination simply by putting on my headphones and closing my eyes.
[Editor’s note: please don’t drive with headphones on and eyes closed. You will not arrive at your destination in a cheerful state.]
But it’s not just the entertainment value of audiobooks that I love. Listening to an audiobook while driving can also help pass the time more pleasantly and make a long journey seem shorter. And if you’re like me and tend to get a little restless on long drives, an audiobook can provide a welcome distraction and help keep your mind off the miles ahead.
Reading in the tub
There is nothing quite like the joy of settling into a warm, bubbly bath with a good book and a glass of wine. And if you really want to elevate the experience, I highly recommend giving audiobooks a try.
For me, there is something truly indulgent about the way an audiobook can transport you to another world while you’re relaxing in the bath. Whether it’s a gripping thriller, a heartwarming romance, or a classic piece of literature, an audiobook can provide the perfect accompaniment to a relaxing soak in the tub.
But it’s not just the entertainment value of audiobooks that I love. Listening to an audiobook in the bath can also be a great way to unwind and de-stress after a long day. And with a waterproof speaker or a pair of waterproof headphones, you can enjoy your audiobook without worrying about getting your device wet.
Audiobooks while making love
Running the New York marathon is no small feat, and finding ways to stay motivated and focused during the grueling 26.2-mile course can be a challenge. But for me, one of the joys of audiobooks is their ability to help keep me motivated and entertained while running long distances.
Whether I’m pounding the pavement in Central Park or tackling the hills of Queens, an audiobook can provide the perfect distraction and help take my mind off the miles ahead. And with a pair of headphones and a device to play my audiobook on, I can lose myself in a good story and forget about the aches and pains of running.
But it’s not just the entertainment value of audiobooks that I love. Listening to an audiobook while running can also help pass the time more pleasantly and make a long run seem shorter. And if you’re like me and tend to get a little restless on long runs, an audiobook can provide a welcome distraction and help keep your mind off the miles ahead.
[Editor’s note. ChatGPT is remarkably coy about sex of any kind, in much the same way that NightCafé censors anything overly explicit. I am sorry to say, Gentle Reader, that you will have to use your imagination. After all, a fun time under the covers should be like a marathon, right?]

So if you haven’t yet discovered the pleasures of audiobooks, I highly recommend giving them a try. You might just find, like I have, that they add an entirely new dimension to your reading experience. Happy listening!

I thought I’d try out this new ChatGPT AI generator that everyone is talking about.
I opened an account and handed it a series of prompts like this one:
Write about the joys of listening to audiobooks while making love as if spoken by Stephen Fry
The output was good — I really liked the very Stephen Fry touch of enjoying a glass of wine in the tub — but as you can see above each prompt followed a very similar pattern. It also neglected to mention that Stephen Fry is one of the world’s best narrators of audiobooks.
I didn’t change anything except to delete some of the repetitions at the beginning and end of each response.
All of the images were created by AI. I had rather a lot of fun making them. Sometimes they can be totally bizarre, others works of great beauty and relevance. and often both at once.
If you want to get a more complete AI experience — and I really should have put this at the beginning of my story — there is a green “play” icon just above the title with the word “Listen” also in green. Press that and select the “Harry” English voice. This will read the entire article in a voice and accent that is quite close to Stephen Fry.
Yana Bostongirl speaks to my introverted soul here. I have given her fifty claps but not yet worked up the courage to leave a comment. If you could, Dear Reader, please leave one on my behalf?
I couldn’t pass this one up. Ich liebe London! Dr. Preeti Singh explore les merveilles de cette ville magique. लंदन कई पृष्ठभूमि के कई लोगों का घर है।
Josephine Crispin talks about the joys of heritage and sharing with others. This is something close to my heart. We are a diverse lot, when you look around the globe. A healthy, happy society is one that includes all sorts of people from all sorts of places.
