Finding My Authentic Voice in a Conservative Society

In India significant number of households adheres to conservative values for various historical, cultural, and societal reasons. Most of the families prefer to follow the traditions and customs that have been passed down from generations.
Many families still live in a joint family. Growing up in such a conservative family many such beliefs I have instilled in myself without even knowing about it. One of such belief that I internalised is that expressing my true thoughts and feelings was inappropriate and dis-respectful.
In our community, respecting authority and keeping peace often meant not sharing personal thoughts or opinions. I remember times when my opinions or feelings were dismissed, making me feel that my voice didn’t matter. This made me feel isolated and misunderstood, unable to connect deeply with others. I missed opportunities to pursue my interests and passions, and my identity became unclear. My self-worth was tied to conforming rather than being true to myself.
It was a pivotal moment when I realized the significance of self-expression. Embracing it has made me feel more genuine, liberated, and confident.

Can you share a self-belief you inherited from your family or society that you feel is inappropriate or limiting? Reflect on how it has impacted your life and describe your journey in challenging and overcoming it in a journal entry. Your insights might inspire others to reflect on their own beliefs.
