The Therapeutic Benefits of Writing: My Story of Healing
Turning My Struggles Into Art
What is writing?
Writing is essentially a means of sharing thoughts and experiences. A person can communicate their emotions through writing.
Writing can take on many different forms, including non-fictional writing like essays or articles, as well as creative writing like poetry or fiction.
How Writing Can Heal
I was lost before I started writing. Because I had no idea who I was, what I wanted, or how to organize my feelings, I was feeling nervous and unhappy. It’s very frustrating to not be aware of your current emotions. I used to think that I was continuously on edge, unable to unwind or truly participate in the environment. Specific emotions can be challenging to recognize and convey because they may feel muddled or blended together.
This made it difficult for me to concentrate on one item at a time or to focus on activities. Rapid mood swings caused me to feel joyful one second and unhappy or angry the next. I had a lack of energy or motivation, which made it challenging to finish duties or participate in activities you often like.
A person runs across a variety of situations in life. Because it allows people a safe and creative method to express their thoughts and experiences, writing may be a powerful therapeutic tool. Writing can provide people clarity of mind, a new perspective, as well as a sense of release and catharsis, whether it’s poetry, fiction, or journaling.
I have always turned to writing for comfort as a child. I would jot down any ideas I had, including novels, poetry, and other literary works. But as I got older, writing evolved from a pastime to a therapeutic tool. I experienced a challenging phase of sadness and anxiety in my early 20s. I was unable to express my feelings and thoughts and felt lost and alone. It was then that I turned to writing once again.
I had trouble finding the right words at first. I would simply stare at the white space, my mind racing with conflicting ideas and emotions. But as I kept on writing, something changed. Writing became a relief for me, a safe and productive way for me to express myself and work through my feelings.I started putting my own experiences and emotions into my personal essays. At first, it was unsettling to feel so open and defenseless on the page. However, as I kept writing, I discovered that doing so gave me greater understanding and clarity of my own thoughts and feelings. I was able to face myself more safely through writing.
Not just that, it helped me process difficult memories, explore my own identity and values. In nutshell, it helped me create my unique character that I wanted to be.
Why is it important to express emotions?
Humans are unique above all other living things because of our ability to experience emotions. Without emotions, life would be meaningless. We experience a variety of emotions, including regrets, anger, grief, joy, and happiness.
When these feelings are suppressed, it can lead to some very serious issues. Expression of emotions in a healthy way can assist to lessen their intensity and avert emotional breakdowns, but suppressing or stifling them can result in increased tension, worry, and despair.
We can improve our self-awareness, which is a crucial aspect of emotional intelligence, by expressing our emotions. We may better comprehend our own needs and make decisions that are consistent with our values and aims by being aware of and accepting our own emotions.
Emotions are a source of innovation and creativity.
When I was lost and unable to discover and organize my feelings, I wrote about them. This allowed me to access a rich source of creative energy and generate work that is sincere and meaningful. I signed up for Medium at that point.
I would like to thank the people who helped me in this journey and always appreciated my work.
I wanted to take a moment to express my sincere gratitude for everything you’ve done for me. Your kindness, support, and guidance have been instrumental in helping me through some of the most challenging times in my life.
