When Did Life Get So Complex?

Looking back when priorities were seemingly much more clear and our washroom really was a hole in the ground.

Reading a story by Sara Burdick sent me back in time.

She reflects that now not having a bathroom is in style — thank you van life!

Growing up we were fortunate enough to have a “summer cabin.” My parents bid on it on a whim when we missed a ferry off of the island. To their surprise, they were the lucky purchasers and became the proud owners of a 3 acres property near the water, a barn complete with a pig sky, flocking chickens and plenty of overgrown bushes.

With no home on the property, the vision was to clear out the barn to become a house.

The first task to complete: digging the hole for the outhouse! It served it’s purpose for 30 years, before my parents dug a well and connected plumbing as they started to think about making the site their retirement property.
