Each Friday, Collector will present three disparate but artistically worthwhile digital artifacts from the worlds of music, performance, and art.

Chain Wallet “Muted Colors”

I grew up with 80s music, but never really liked 80s music until the 00s when 00s bands started playing 80s music. Norwegian band Chain Wallet checks off a number of 80s tropes — jangly, slightly phased guitars, driving motorik beats, hovering washes of synth, 8th note bass lines, and slightly monotone but ultimately melodic vocals. But despite these reference points, the band has crafted a beautiful debut record, full of warm, catchy songs.

Tank And The Bangas “Oh, Heart”

Tank And The Bangas have certainly been blowing up ever since the NPR Tiny Desk submission video went viral. Compared to the submission video, “Oh, Heart” is a slightly less complicated song, relying on minimal musical accompaniment — keyboard and snare drum. But the song still includes the same degree of individuality. The performance is more of a micro-study of the band — the shape-shifting voice that goes from sincere to self-aware in the same sentence, the interplay with back-up vocals, the balance of lyrical sweetness with the bite, the subtlety that drives the inflection of each word.

MCウクダダとMC i know “7月のバッドアイディア @ りんご音楽祭”

This is MC ukudada & MC i know from Okinawa Prefecture, Japan. They have a really wild record. I don’t know much else, but I like it.
