RECKONING Season 1 Episode 52/120

EXT. STREETS OF NEW YORK - DAY

Sara’s walking down the street in her favorite outfit - black jacket, dark pants, black boots and red glasses. She makes her way through a horde of people who’re all probably going to work. She’s talking to Teacher on the phone:

SARA
How did you find out about all this?

TEACHER (O.S.)
I hacked into the police servers. I know all about them: what they’re doing, where they’re going, what food they’re usually ordering... Everything.

SARA
(crossing the street)
And the inspector ... Davis or whatever. Who is she? How much does she know?

TEACHER (O.S.)
Barbara Davis. 43. She comes from a lower middle-class family, and moreover, she’s also a black woman. Life has been rough for her. She made straight A’s in the Academy, graduated summa cum laude, worked hard to become what she is today. It was hard for her to compete with her white male counterparts, but she’s a fighter.

Sara gets another call. It’s Rachel. Sara seems reluctant, however, she decides not to pick up.

TEACHER (O.S.)
Hey, you there?

SARA
(a little sheepishly)
Yes. Just a message from Verizon. Go on.

TEACHER (O.S.)
Her ex-partner has recently retired, so she got a new one. John Ryan. 39. He got married nearly a year ago. His wife is pregnant. From what I can tell, he is completely clean. No skeletons in the closet. Nothing suspicious.

SARA
(walking hurriedly)
But why they’ve been making inquiries about my apartment? How did they even think of that?

TEACHER (O.S.)
I don’t know, but I saw in John’s call log that he called yesterday all the people who’re renting out apartments in your building. He definitely knows something, that is, Davis knows something. They’re probably already on the way there.

SARA
Shit. I have to get there first. There are pictures of me, with my mom, with ... (disgustedly) Ezekiel. If Davis gets ahold of them, I’m done. (notices something) Oh, no! For fuck’s sake!

TEACHER (O.S.)
What is it?

Barbara and John get out of the police car across the street. Sara’s looking incredulously as they enter the building in the vicinity - the building where she rented the apartment.

SARA
They are here. They already went inside. (sighs angrily) I’ll have to find another way in.
