Let’s be honest — 2020’s a rough year. We need to have better political conversations now. How can stoicism help us improve our public sphere?

Stoicism can help us have better conversations with each other, even in a year as chaotic as 2020. Self awareness, intentionality, introspection and self improvement — these are all skills that stoic philosophers encourage us to practice regularly.

Using chaos as an opportunity to learn, and grow, rather than succumb to the sheer weight of this particularly challenging moment moment. Choosing the purpose for engaging in an act or a conversation, rather than just stumbling into one . We need all of these skills — and they are skills that take practice! — to improve how we’re talking to each other about politics. We will not find solutions if we cannot understand each other, and we won’t understand each other if we can’t first deal with the emotional turmoil involved in having upsetting conversations.
