Red Bird River

On Saturday, September 15th, EKU’s Fall 2018 Adventure Programs are taking a trip to Red Bird River for a day of canoeing. The Adventure Programs are for students of all levels, “from the novice to the advanced athlete”, according to the Program’s website and are organized through the Fitness and Wellness Center. One of the program leaders and the Senior Assistant Director of Campus Recreation, Tommy Willis explained that “We learn by doing, that’s our philosophy … you’ll get to experience things outside of campus … it’s one of the few programs that will take you to experience the world”.

The trip, which will involve an immersive journey down the Red Bird River near the Daniel Boone National Forest, will cost $35 and includes all transportation and equipment expenses. Willis notes, “It’s a day trip for students to go out and go canoeing. We include all equipment cost … food for overnight trips … and travel cost”. Interested students can sign up at the desk of the Fitness and Wellness Center or online at https://east-a-60ols.csi-cloudapp.net/ekucampusrec/Home.aspx .

In addition to the canoeing trip, the Rec offers many other Adventure Programs including hiking at Cummins Falls on September 16th and in Shenandoah on the 29th-30th, as well as the kickoff Adventure Program, the NOC Weekend on September 8th-9th which will include whitewater rafting and ziplining in Bryson City, North Carolina. The Campus Rec is also offering an Adventure Program coming up over winter break, “we have our first ever winter trip to Big Sky Montana” Willis said.
