Well today was a mix of everything

It rained, I watched a woman fold clothes, watched some YouTube, listened to a podcast and had some ribs. BUT hang on, let me explain…

Declutter and organise the ‘KonMari’ way

I’d been told while here to pick a session that was a bit random. This session from Marie Kondo was that session. Organize the World: Design Your Life to Spark Joy - Japanese decluttering guru Marie Kondo explained her acclaimed ‘KonMari’ Method. I’d mentioned to my wife I was at a talk by Marie Kondo, and her response was… “Ooooh, she is the ‘GaryVee’ of mumsnet.” I suppose that could be possible - she folded clothes on stage. A hoodie, a t-shirt, a pair of trousers, and 2 pairs of socks. Don’t believe me?

WAIT!! It wasn’t all folding clothes - She did try and translate some of her methods into the digital area as SXSW have highlighted below:

Did someone say Union Jack?

The UK’s Department for International Trade have a presence here and host events at their ‘Great Britain House’, which as you can see below looks very trendy. I even had a Yorkshire Tea.

One of the UK companies there showcasing was Swap Bots which are a hybrid video game and toy augmented reality experience using mobile or tablet. Very parent friendly as there are no in-app purchases and the toy element is at pocket money prices. Currently on Kickstarter.

YouTuber Casey

Casey Neistat’s talk - From YouTube Star to Media Company Co-Founder was really interesting. He has produced videos for companies like Nike and Samsung and is currently building a new media and tech company for CNN. He played a few of his videos during the session and they were brilliant, here is one of them:

Tim Ferriss Live

Tim Ferriss is probably best well known for his bestseller book — ‘4 Hour Work Week’. It spent 4 years on the New York Times Bestseller List. I’ve followed him since and one of the main things he does now is his podcast, which is generally the number 1 business podcast on iTunes most of the time. Today he was hosting a live podcast episode The Tim Ferriss Show LIVE with Cheryl Strayed, Cheryl is author of ‘Wild’, her account of her 1,100-mile solo hike along the Pacific Crest Trail, from the Mojave Desert to Washington State (the film adaptation starred Reese Witherspoon).

The 90 minute extended interview covered Cheryl’s creative process, daily rituals, favorite books, and more. She said she was a big fan of lists and finds she get most of her writing done by ‘binge writing’. Going away for 48 hours and totally focusing on the writing yields better results for her.

Texas BBQ Please

I’m here in Austin with around 30 delegates from Bristol & Bath’s creative sector, organised by Bristol Media (who support and promote Bristol’s media industries). Most of us headed out this evening to a proper BBQ joint called Salt Lick BBQ. Tasty stuff. I should state that wasn’t my plate. It was a sharing plate, honest.
