Accusations of defamation of The Pagan Community At Bucharest Pride 2023
The ACCEPT association and Q Club are facing criticism and accusations of cultural appropriation and defamation of the pagan community during Bucharest Pride 2023.
The “ Transcendent Drag Odyssey “ event organized by the ACCEPT Association and Q Club as part of Bucharest Pride 2023, at the center of a scandal that caused accusations of Cultural Appropriation and defamation of pagan culture.
Cultural Appropriation is the inappropriate or unrecognized adoption of elements of one culture or identity by members of another culture or identity. This practice is considered controversial and harmful because it can perpetuate stereotypes, misrepresentations and disrespect.
The event “ Transcendent Drag Odyssey “ generated discontent in the Pagan community due to its theme inspired by ancient Greek culture. Critics claim that the organizers did not adequately understand or respect Greek culture and used specific elements in an offensive and disparaging manner.
One of the aspects pointed out is the way in which male characters have been represented who practice drag in a contemporary style, but in a manner that misrepresents and insults the Greek culture and the pagan community. Also, the costumes and make-up used do not respect the authenticity and significance of the Ancient Greek period, which has generated accusations of religious blasphemy.
It is not the first time Q Club has been accused of cultural appropriation. In a previous event, the club held an Egyptian-themed party that featured offensive and sexualized depictions of Ancient Egyptian culture and civilization.
These actions are perceived as perpetuating inequality and discrimination, lack of understanding and respect for cultural practices, customs and symbols. Through the inappropriate use of cultural elements, a framework is created to mock and trivialize that culture.
The Pagan community and the organization The New Pagan Dawn — Tnpd have expressed concern and dissatisfaction with these practices and have taken several actions. These include referrals to international organizations such as ECER, Pagan Awareness Network Australia Inc. and ILGA-Europe, as well as material and event withdrawal requests from the ACCEPT Association. Criminal and civil complaints were also filed against ACCEPT Association and Q Club.
The New Pagan Dawn — Tnpd emphasized the importance of dialogue and collaboration with representatives of the respective culture to ensure respect for the cultural context and integrity of the works presented in drag queen events.
