Recently at redBus we adopted In App Update feature.

This was done for the purpose of getting faster adoption of app updates. Faster adoption is very important for a couple of reasons,

  1. Users get to experience new features soon
  2. Faster penetration of features
  3. Positive impact on sale campaigns.

A gentle nudge was introduced in the home screen to notify users that an update is available.

This is done in a non intrusive way, so that it does not disrupt the user experience.

Google Play Core API takes care of downloading the app and installing the update.

The Impact

The adoption of the newly release app version was pretty good. (40% users were on the latest version 2 days from full roll out). Usually it takes around 1 week for 40% adoption. It was also noticed that most users showed a positive intent to update the app.

The update message is generic right now. It would be great if there is a message that could give users more context of what the update is all about. This can be the “Whats New” text that is configured on Play console.
