The first of seven principles in Red Cross Red Crescent movement

Volunteers at a Codeathon in Oslo, January 2019.

Red Cross is one of the world’s largest humanitarian organizations, with 11.7 million volunteers all over the world. In the CBS project, more than 150 tech volunteers have contributed to the development of the CBS platform, and volunteers from several countries are users of the platform aimed at preventing and detecting disease outbreaks.

The volunteers in the field use their local knowledge to report on health risks using the CBS platform while the tech volunteers use their knowledge to build the platform. But what do all these volunteers have in common? Their desire to work for humanity — the first of seven principles in the Red Cross Red Crescent Movement.

HUMANITY

The International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, born of a desire to bring assistance without discrimination to the wounded on the battlefield, endeavours, in its international and national capacity, to prevent and alleviate human suffering wherever it may be found. Its purpose is to protect human life and health and to ensure respect for the human being. It promotes mutual understanding, friendship, cooperation and lasting peace amongst all people. (IFRC)

This fundamental principle is the first of seven key principles. The principle is made to “ensure respect for human beings”, regardless of their situations. The CBS platform is a technology created with the purpose to detect, prevent and respond early to disease outbreaks. This directly translates into alleviating human suffering by aiming to stop disease outbreaks before they spin out of control and affect more people. With the aim responding with help early, humanity is in the center of the project.

The CBS team want to say thanks for all the amazing work the volunteers do for the humanity, both in the field and as tech volunteers!

Next possibility for tech volunteers to contribute will be at the Codeathon in Brussel next week! Sign up here: https://www.croix-rouge.be/codeathon-2019/
