A month has passed since the 4th Red Cross Codeathon and we are pleased to finally share the excellent results with you!

Norwegian Minister for International Development, Nikolai Astrup, and Secretary General of the Norwegian Red Cross, Bernt Apeland, opened the CBS Codeathon in January.

The 4th Red Cross Codeathon took place from the 18th to the 19th of January 2019. The opening of the event featured visiting speakers, namely Nikolai Astrup (Norwegian Minister for International Development) and Heidi Austlid (CEO of ICT Norway), as well as internal speakers, namely Bernt Apeland (Secretary General of the Norwegian Red Cross) and Anine Kongelf (CBS project leader).

In total 74 people attended the two-day Codeathon to help us code for the greater good. This included tech volunteers, domain experts, event organisation volunteers, guests and Red Cross staff members. 38% of tech volunteers were new volunteers and 62% were returning volunteers. 60% of all participants were male/40% of all participants were female.

Everyone self-assigned to the team where they thought their skill-set would be most useful by hanging their pictures up.

Participants worked in 6 technical teams, some representing a bounded context (alerts, reporting, admin, alerts, analytics, notification gateway), and two groups representing other specific tasks; frontend migration from angular to react, and a group focusing on clearing up unfinished issues and documentation on the GitHub page.

When reviewing the code development, it is evident that the numbers of additions and deletions are significantly higher than those of previous codeathons:

  • during codeathon 3.0, 545 files changed on master, the number of additions was 23,122 and the number of deletions was 11,229.
  • For codeathon 4.0, the number 862 files changed, 143,868 additions were made, and 66,124 deletions were made.

This is 1.5 times as many files changed, 6.2 times as many additions and 5.8 times as many deletions — all-time highs for both additions and deletions!

Wow!

Additionally, discussions on the CBS Slack group were at an all-time high with the highest ever number of weekly active users and users posting messages. This high continued for a full week after the codeathon — which just emphasizes how incredibly motivated and engaged our volunteer contributors are!

In summary, we could not have been happier with the 4th Red Cross Codeathon. As always, the event was interesting and fun, and it was really great seeing and interacting with all our awesome volunteers!
