Happy Mother’s Day!

In every species, mothers do some pretty amazing things. Here’s a short list of reasons why everyone should call their moms today:

  • Even before birth, elephant and octopus moms are practically superheroes. Elephants have a 22 month gestation period, and octopi can lay up to 200,000 eggs — yikes!
  • If an earwig mother is injured or dies when her children have just hatched, they will eat her for sustenance.
  • Female polar bears sometimes adopt!
  • Orangutan moms continuously maintain physical contact with their babies for the first four months.
  • Koala bears eat eucalyptus leaves, which are poisonous for newborns. So, koala moms help them to build up a tolerance by feeding them her feces.
  • Human moms: the best of them all! Why are you thankful for your mom? (Hopefully not for feeding you feces…)
