As a cultural non-profit organization based in Redwood City, Círculo Cultural provides creative, educational, and recreational opportunities for Latino families while preserving their traditional art and culture. By partnering together with Círculo Cultural, the City of Redwood City celebrates the City’s diversity and helps support creative and enriching programs for every age group in the family. This blog provides more information about how the City of Redwood City and Círculo Cultural support an inclusive community.

Programs

Círculo Cultural’s inclusive programs seek to support the needs of Bay Area Latino communities. Their classes and workshops, which are taught in Spanish, aim to inspire positive social change by bridging creativity and socially conscious values. These programs include: chess, creative writing and art workshops, piano, guitar, children’s choir, folk dance, ballet, taekwondo, English, boot camp, nutrition, Zumba, origami and a cinema forum. In addition, the City of Redwood City also provides Círculo Cultural theater space at the Veterans Memorial Senior Center to facilitate their events.

Recent Events and Contributions

Círculo Cultural’s presence in Redwood City ranges everywhere from performing their traditional dances to volunteering at various events. They even participate in City Council meetings to advocate for affordable housing. Their active involvement in the following events have positively impacted the Redwood City community.

Kermes 2017 — Dia del Nino

This past spring, Círculo Cultural partnered with the Latino Community Council of Redwood City to organize the fifth annual Kermes 2017 — Dia del Nino. This event raised funds for the Early Childhood Learning Center in the Fair Oaks Library. The public enjoyed games for children, music, theater, Ballet Folklorico, food, arts and crafts, and community information updates.

STEAM Fest 2.0

Círculo Cultural hosted an origami booth at this year’s STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) Fest 2.0. This event brought academic disciplines together in a community- supported, interactive environment. Their partnership with the Redwood City Library Foundation, Redwood City Public Library, and the Redwood City Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department, helped raise money for Wi-Fi hot spots and technology at the Redwood City Public Library Fair Oaks and Downtown branches.

Dia de los Muertos

Círculo Cultural also partners with the Redwood City Public Library, the City of Redwood City’s Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department and the San Mateo County History Museum to host the annual Dia de los Muertos celebration on Courthouse Square, slated for Nov. 5, 2017. This is their biggest event of the year as they invite everyone to celebrate this Mexican tradition! For more details on this family friendly event, go here.

4th of July Parade, Festival and Fireworks

Congratulations to Círculo Cultural for clinching first-place for their float in the July 4th parade! Their float (shown above) beautifully depicted the 150th Anniversary of Redwood City.

Scholarships

In addition to helping enrich the community by participating in the above events, Casa Círculo Cultural offered their first ever scholarship to high school seniors earlier this year! The scholarship is part of the Community Impact Scholarship Program, which aims to inspire and encourage students wanting to complete a higher education, while promoting community service.
