Redwood City’s Intern Perspective: Favorite Burgers

This summer, the City of Redwood City is hosting 17 college interns that are working with different departments throughout the City. College students come with big appetites and an enthusiasm to explore a new City. We’ve asked them to team up and share their favorite Redwood City food picks.

Who doesn’t love a good burger? Read on to learn about their favorite burger joints! Let us know what you think of these favorites and share your picks with us!

The Patty Shack

This spot on Main Street offers a great selection of high-quality burgers and sandwiches for a wide range of tastes. Their menu includes burgers that are as classic as a simple hamburger to more specialized items such as “My Boy Blue,” which comes with red onion, marmalade, and blue cheese, or the “Midnight Burger,” which includes a fried egg, bacon, and cheddar. However, the Patty Shack makes more than the name would imply, so if burgers aren’t your speed, but you’re still in the mood for a good sandwich, hot dog, or salad, the Patty Shack will deliver.

Canyon Inn

This famous eatery in the Canyon neighborhood not only serves an excellent meal, but also offers a rich and interesting history. Decorated from top to bottom with sports memorabilia, Canyon Inn gained fame back in the early 1980s for being a favorite spot to eat of the San Francisco 49ers, becoming highly successful after their 1982 Super Bowl win. Here, you can enjoy one of their well-made, juicy burgers, such as the “Canyon burger” with bacon, avocado, mushrooms, and Swiss cheese, or the “Bell burger” with sautéed bell peppers, onions, and barbecue sauce. Their menu also provides customers with a wide and diverse assortment of sandwiches, hot dogs, pizza, salads, Mexican food, steaks, ribs, and pasta.

Don’t be fooled by Homeskillet’s small location, it’s menu is big on flavor. The restaurant has a very old-school feeling, and although they’re primarily a donut and breakfast shop, they serve an excellent burger for lunch. From their menu, you are able to decide from items such as the “Kokomo burger” which has pepper jack, grilled pineapples, bacon, and teriyaki sauce, the “Hot chip” which includes cheddar, potato chips, and chipotle sauce, or you can choose to combine their specialties into the “Luther,” a burger with American cheese, bacon, and glazed donuts for buns, creating a sweet and savory sandwich.

Fast Food Face-Off: The Interns Pick

While Redwood City has many great local spots to relax and grab a burger, sometimes our interns need a quick meal on the go. Which of these two popular fast-food joints do you think they’ll pick?

In-N-Out Burger: A West Coast classic and a staple of many local’s diets, In-N-Out takes a more old-school approach to their food, offering a simple selection of their famous burgers, fries, drinks, and shakes (aside from a few variations on the secret menu). Their burgers, despite their simplicity, are the restaurant’s greatest strength, offering customers savory patties covered in secret sauce and placed between warm, toasted buns making for a straightforward and delicious sandwich. The only thing they could improve about this restaurant is to have more locations across the country (and maybe make the fries crispier without having to order them “well done”).

Five Guys: A favorite place to grab high-quality fast food, Five Guys is relatively new to the Bay Area, but it very quickly gained a following, and with good reason. Five Guy’s menu is limited compared to many other restaurants like it, serving burgers, hot dogs, and fries, but it makes up for this with its customization and flat-out good food. The cooks are generous with both the proportions and amount of toppings packed onto their burgers, making the food messy, but in a very good way. They also have some of the best fries you can find at any fast food restaurant.

The verdict: The votes are in! Redwood City’s interns unanimously voted their favorite fast food restaurant as In-n-Out! Lucky for them there is one close by City Hall on Veterans and Jefferson.

So do you agree? Did they make the right choice? What is your favorite? Let us know in the comments section! We may even feature your pick in one of our Neighborhood Road Trip videos.
