Redwood City’s Intern Perspective: Favorite Sushi and Japanese Food

As you may know from reading the last Intern Perspective, the City of Redwood City is hosting 17 college interns this summer. These college students have big appetites and are excited to explore Redwood City. We’ve asked them to team up and share their favorite Redwood City food picks.

Is there anyone in the Bay Area who doesn’t love good sushi? In Redwood City, we have several amazing options to choose from to try rolls, bento boxes, teppanyaki, and more. Read on to learn about our interns’ favorite Japanese restaurants! Let us know what you think of these favorites and share your picks with us!

Oh Baby Sushi:

Oh Baby Sushi Bar & Grill is a Japanese restaurant located on Roosevelt Avenue that serves sushi, Japanese curry, udon, sashimi, ramen, sake and more. Oh Baby specializes in making their own unique rolls including the “Oh Baby Hand Roll,” “Winter Wonderland,” and the “Godzilla Roll.” They also provide excellent specialty plates, teppanyaki, and a selection of vegetarian options. For dessert, you can try their mochi ice cream, green tea cheesecake, or fried bananas with ice cream.

Little Madfish:

Little Madfish brings high-quality, well priced Japanese cuisine to Redwood City’s Sequoia Station. Their menu contains a variety of choices to suit their customers’ tastes, including 55 different rolls, bento boxes, salads, curry dishes, rice bowls, eight styles of ramen, and more. Some of their tasty sushi creations include rolls like the “Go Giants!,” the “Cinco de Mayo,” and the “Raiders.” Come during their lunch and “Happy Hour” times (11 a.m. to 5 p.m. every day, 9:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays), for reduced prices. Little Madfish also offers catering for parties and events.

Sushi Plus:

This restaurant located in Woodside Plaza offers high-quality, authentic Japanese cuisine for reasonable prices. Sushi Plus serves udon, sushi, bento boxes containing items like California rolls, sashimi, gyoza, tempura, teriyaki, and more. Among their unique offerings, Sushi Plus offers rolls such as the “49er’s Roll,” the “Stanford Roll,” the “Golden Gate Roll,” and a variety of deep fried rolls. Many of their selections are made even more affordable during lunch hours (11:30 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.), at which time they also serve several specials such as pork katsu curry, their yaki niku sizzling plate, and miso seafood ramen. While enjoying your sushi, Sushi Plus offers a nice selection of wine, sake, or Japanese beer to indulge in.

Sakura:

Sakura is a Redwood City native, hibachi-style grill that opened in 2011 to serve teppanyaki and sushi. Sakura’s menu includes a large selection of sushi choices, but their main draw is the teppanyaki. Diners are in for a very entertaining show from Sakura’s highly-skilled chefs who cook your food on flat top grills right in front of you performing various stunts for diners’ enjoyment. Customers are able to choose various meats including chicken, steak, lobster, shrimp, or scallops with vegetables and rice, which are all included in the chef’s cooking performance.
