You’ve got a Question, Redwood City has the Answer

Q: Why is Theatre Way closing temporarily?

A: The City is concerned with the high amount of pedestrian activity and potential conflicts with vehicle traffic on Theater Way as a result of the sidewalk closure on one side of the street for the construction of Theater Way, and sidewalk cafes on the other. Due to this safety concern, the City will be moving forward with temporarily closing Theatre Way to vehicle traffic as of this weekend, starting on Saturday July 23rd.

With the removal of the median on Broadway, cinema drop-offs may now occur on Broadway, in the loading zone adjacent to the Broadway and Theatre Way intersection. For businesses that do not have an alternative delivery area, we will allow limited delivery times on Theatre Way. Emergency vehicles will also have access to the street when needed.

The street closure will continue on a temporary basis after the PAL Blues festival this weekend. As construction progresses on the 815 Hamilton construction project, the City will monitor the street closure and make adjustments as needed.

Q: What is myRWC? What would I use this mobile app for?

A: myRWC is a simple, convenient tool that puts City Hall at your “fingertips”. This multi-platform solution provides Redwood City residents, businesses, and visitors access to a set of local government services, 24-hours a day, 7 days a week.

The app helps you quickly report issues without having to hunt for the right number (although you are still welcome to call us!), such as graffiti, abandoned vehicles, broken parking meters, etc.Your request will be routed to the Redwood City team members responsible for addressing your concern and you all can track the status and resolution of the request right from your phone.

You can provide additional details as you wish, and even attach a photo. myRWC will automatically know the issue location if you have enabled your device’s GPS and location services.

Aside from submitting concerns, you can also access popular online services such as class registration, online bill payment, City employment opportunities, and more.

Start today by going to your device’s app store, search for myRWC, download and install.

Q: What volunteer opportunities are available in Redwood City?

A: Redwood City is grateful for thousands of volunteers who have given over 200,000 hours of their time and involvement in supporting our community. The City of Redwood City offers numerous volunteer programs meaning there is something for everyone who wants to lend a helping hand.

Looking to give back by helping youth literacy? Participate in Children’s Homework Help and assist students from grades K-6th grade with math, spelling, writing, and other homework subjects. Project READ is another great tutoring program where you can assist adults, youth and families in reading. The Traveling Storytime program allows you to share your love of books, reading and libraries with the children of Redwood City in preschools and home daycare settings. For more volunteer literacy programs go here.

Love the outdoors? Join the Pride and Beautification Committee. This group promotes the quality of life in Redwood City by creating, participating in, and supporting activities and programs that improve the physical and aesthetic environment of our community. CityTrees is another outdoor focused volunteer group that promotes and supports urban forestry efforts in Redwood City by planting and maintaining trees on public property.

Want to reach out to your community? Join members of the Volunteer in Police Services program as they assist the Police Department to provide a high level of service or volunteer to work with your local seniors at the Veterans Memorial Senior Center.

Q: I heard Redwood City was recently named a Preserve America Community. How is the City working to continue to preserve the community’s rich past?

A: The City of Redwood City is proud to be designated as a Preserve America Community. The Preserve America program is a federal effort to encourage and support community efforts to preserve and enjoy America’s priceless cultural and natural heritage. This designation shows that we have worked hard to preserve our city’s history but it certainly does not stop there.

In a Planning Commission meeting last month a public hearing was held to to discuss the expansion of the Main Street Historic District. A resolution was made to City Council to recommend they adopt the Main Street Historic District Expansion and designate the properties at 847–849 Main Street, 935 Main Street, and 1101 Main Street as Historic Landmarks.

The Redwood City Downtown Precise Plan (DTPP) has developed regulations for Historic Resource Prevention. Within that chapter of the DTPP is a map of historic resources and very specific preservation regulations pertaining to each of the historic resources identified. To view this map and preservation information go here.

Redwood City’s 150th anniversary is coming up in 2017. Along with this milestone will come events, festivals, a new historic Redwood city website, and a monthly historic blog series, which kicked off last week. Information will be provided through our social media channels and city events calendar so you can stay in the know on ways the community will celebrate Redwood City’s rich history as we get closer to 2017.
