Earlier this year, Reef Finance made the pivotal decision to change it’s primary goal: instead of being a decentralized finance (DeFi) focused parachain on Polkadot, Reef would launch its own layer 1, Ethereum virtual machine (EVM) compatible blockchain. This had the immediate impact changing Reef’s trajectory as a DeFi operating system into a Substrate-based smart contract blockchain that could soon offer Solidity developers the same integrated development environment (IDE) tools they use now, but with low contract deployment costs, a Nominated Proof of Stake blockchain with low carbon footprint, and in-place upgrades that don’t require hard forks.

After beating the “DeFi operating system” drum for so long, it’s been a constant work in progress to change the narrative about Reef as we transition to Reef Chain. While DeFi products and protocols are core to its success, Reef now has broader goals and is attracting users and developers of all kinds. Months after the mainnet launch — with Ledger hardware wallet support, Reef debit card, a native browser extension, and a dedicated mobile app all on the way — plus the first significant native dApp released, it’s time to take the next step in Reef’s story.

Today we are happy to announce that Reef Finance is now Reef, and a new website is live at https://reef.io!

With a slew of integrator announcements made throughout 2021 that span the cryptocurrency industry from stablecoins, to lending platforms, to NFT marketplaces and games, the Reef community has been able to establish itself as a leading destination. The original goals of making Reef an attractive network to bridge to, deposit liquidity into pools, access terrific products with transactions that cost just a few cents, and an active community of builders supporting each other are still core to Reef’s future. However, with increasing interaction between different kinds of dApps and protocols, it is only natural for Reef to be a premiere platform for any builder, making it easier than ever to supplement DeFi with other products, provide a terrific development experience, and make it easy to access hundreds of thousands of Reef token holders and fan.

Thank you for coming along the journey so far. We have much to look forward to as we head towards the end of 2021, and well into 2022!
