Western New York is far from New York City culturally and geographically. A 30-minute commute is unheard of in the downstate area, with about 1.5 million people travelling each day to just Manhattan. NYC. Here that might be the average.

Few residents spend more than an hour traveling to their places of employment. A 30-minute commute might be close to the average. Like most of the U.S., we drive ourselves at work. Metropolitan New York utilizes much more mass transit.

If I were to be the one to define the border and split off into a separate state, I’d draw the line along the county lines of Wayne, Seneca, and Cayuga; Schuyler, Tompkins; Chemung and Tioga. It might be too far to the east for people who think the defining line is the Niagara and Finger Lakes tourism regions. I think of my line as a point between large communities’ influences…
