A confession: I am utterly amused and amazed about the Clubhouse success in Europe. It has hit the European tech ecosystem like a wrecking ball and within about two months nearly every VC, tech journalist and community builder started hosting events on this app. Mike Butcher runs Tech Media Show Club, Tech.eu covers major happenings of week in the European Tech, La French Tech has a weekly room, Akash Bajwa has set up the European Tech Hub with daily events on Clubhouse, and pretty much every niche interest and entrepreneurial community migrated there. Honestly, at this moment it would make sense to start a separate guide to sort through all the Clubhouse events and not wonder if its hype will run out of the steam rather soon.

When the pandemic hit one year ago it was apparent that something has to change with online events. My hypothesis at that time was that we should see emergence of common body or service, a community of event organizers, speakers and attendees that would allow them to pick between multiple events on one platform. Sort of Netflix for streaming professional content with additional networking possibilities to keep people on the platform.

Many have tried to achieve this. Most successful ones provided the most convenient tools. Yes, Zoom and Hopin. Others faded away under brutal competition. And yet Clubhouse took that niche in Europe with surprising ease, despite being audio- and iPhone-only. Or maybe because of it?

I’m looking forward to future analysis why emergence of audio-only social network was inevitable, about importance of artificial scarcity in defining desirability and belonging, and how Clubhouse blindsided Facebook, Twitter, Hopin & Co while transforming the very meaning of an online event. In the mean time, let’s all enjoy this brand new phenomenon (and follow key tech people there, while we are at that).
