“Clubhouse. Is the idea to take the least valuable part of conferences and make it scale infinitely? Non-stop expert panel discussions? I was excited …and now I’m confused” Steli Efti tweeted not a long time ago.

It was fun to consider expert panels as the least valuable part of conferences. Having even less value than promotional leaflets that are being pushed in the goodie bags for the attendees?

And then another friend mentioned that Clubhouse is essentially unbundling radio programme and putting on app only one particular part — the one where guests are being interviewed by a radio presenter.

This got me thinking. Is unbundling happening in the event industry?

The answer is sort of yes. Jein, if you speak German. There is nothing, as of yet, that would be a stand alone unbundled version of a big conference. Maybe it is even not supposed to be. Conferences, after all, are a concentrated bundle of so many processes that only make sense if one can take couple days off to enjoy them all. Yet online conferences are unbundling their content into series of smaller, shorter events. They are building communities around themselves, exclusive membership clubs and online networking opportunities.

This sort of unbundling is happening, and it is accelerating in 2021. Next week is dominated by small short events, and the larger conferences split their sessions to conveniently accommodate their attendees work schedules. Looking forward to it.

Let the small event season to commence!
